The women’s fertility level is affected by the number and the sex of children already had. In this article, we used both the number and the sex of children in the period parity progression model to construct a new indicator for analyzing the fertility in China. We found that almost all the women gave birth to at least one child in their lifetime. There was little sex selection for the first birth and similarly, for the second birth if the first was a son. However, more women tend to give birth to another child, usually a son, if their first birth was a girl. These phenomena varied for both the urban and the rural residents.
